What are the Best Canes for Self-Defense?

What are the Best Canes for Self-Defense?
This week on the Kombativ YouTube channel, we wanted to show off the most popular walking canes we carry for self-defense purposes. Watch the video to see us test them out!
The first cane I tested was the Rattan Martial Arts Cane. What I like most about this specific cane is that it is inconspicuous and looks exactly like a standard wooden walking cane. The major difference is that it is made from an extremely lightweight and durable vine-like material known as rattan, which is very popular in the martial arts. This specific cane has a curved crook handle, which can be used for hooking in various martial arts techniques. To see my full review of this walking cane, make sure to watch the video.

The second self-defense cane I reviewed and tested was the Indestructible Plastic Hook Cane. Of all the canes I reviewed in this video, this one was my favorite because it is virtually indestructible and designed to handle any self-defense cane technique. It is made from a nylon-fiber material, which is almost impossible to break and features a spike on it's hook, which allows for various pressure point techniques. Be sure to watch the video to see my entire review.

The third cane I reviewed was the Stealth Combat Sword Cane. This cane is a little different than the previous two canes I reviewed because it features a knob or ball handle instead of a curved crook handle. The other thing that makes this cane so different is that it has a hidden sword on the inside of the shaft. And, to make it even better, it uses a compression fitting instead of a threaded fitting which allows it to be unsheathed very quickly.

The final cane I tested in this video was the Stun Gun Cane. This is by far the most unusual cane I displayed in this video and it has the appeal of also being a self-defense stun gun in addition to being a walking cane. I showed this cane off a while back on a video, so I decided to reshow that footage on this video because it was so good. Make sure to watch the video to see me get stunned!

Self-defense canes might seem like a modern invention, but they've actually been around for a really long time - long before anyone was sticking stun guns or hidden swords inside them.

Back in the 1700s and 1800s, carrying a cane wasn't just about support or style - it was also a way to stay safe. In the Victorian era especially, it was totally normal for gentlemen to carry fancy canes that had hidden blades or even gun mechanisms inside. These weren't just for show. They were designed to give someone the upper hand if they ran into trouble on the street. There was even formal training for it. In France, the martial art of La Canne taught people how to fight with a walking cane, sort of like fencing but with sticks. And those moves still hold up today.

Fast forward to now, and the self defense cane is still going strong. The difference is, we've got more options and better materials. Some people still go for traditional wooden canes - solid and dependable. Others prefer something lighter and quicker, like rattan. That's the material I talked about earlier in the Rattan Martial Arts Cane. It's used a lot in martial arts because it's strong without being heavy, which is great when you're trying to react fast.

Then there's the high-tech stuff like the Indestructible Plastic Hook Cane. That thing is made of nylon-fiber and basically built to survive anything. Seriously, it's hard to even scratch it. It also has a spike on the hook, which is great for applying pressure point techniques or hooking limbs.

What's cool is that you don't need to be super fit or trained in martial arts to use a self defense cane effectively. The design itself does a lot of the work. Take the crook handle, for example - that classic curved shape. You can use it to trip someone, hook their arm or leg, or even pull them off balance. Then there's the ball or knob handle, like on the Stealth Combat Sword Cane. That type gives you a solid grip and is awesome for striking.

Speaking of sword canes - yes, they're still a thing. Hidden blades might sound like something out of a movie, but some modern self-defense canes actually come with them built in. The cool part is, they're designed to be discreet and easy to use. The one I reviewed in the video uses a compression fitting, so you can unsheathe it fast - no time wasted twisting.

Of course, if you want to go full James Bond, the Stun Gun Cane is probably the most high-tech option. Not only does it work as a solid cane, but it can actually stun an attacker. It's definitely an eye-opener when you see it in action - literally.

One of the best parts about a self defense cane is that it's totally legal in most places. Unlike knives or guns, you can carry a cane just about anywhere without raising eyebrows. That makes it a great option for people who might not want to (or be able to) carry other types of weapons - whether it's due to age, physical limitations, or local laws.

So, whether you're looking for something simple and reliable or high-tech and tactical, there's probably a self defense cane out there that fits your needs. Plus, with a little training - even just watching a few videos - you can learn how to use one effectively. It's a practical, low-key way to stay safe without looking like you're armed for battle.

"I like the stun cane. Which one is best for defense against animals?

KarateMart Response: That's an excellent question, Tom. I've never specifically used one against an animal, but many people have commented on our YouTube videos that stun guns and stun batons work well against feral dogs and animals. I don't know which one would work best, but I'm guessing some of the larger stun batons might work best because of their loud crackle. I hope that helps!"
