This long wooden weapon was originally an Okinawan weapon because it allowed the uchi-deshi to train without using valuable and expensive metal. The solid wooden rods were used to develop upper body strength and agility, with sparring against other bo staffs, the shorter jo staff, or even nunchaku. This developed lots of range for the bo staff fighters, and gave them real world expeirience with their fighting routines. Now, bo staff are used for katas from a number of international martial arts, with many using rattan, wood, and even metal.

While a hard and sturdy bo staff is ideal, it is not the case for all circumstances. This fighting staff is a single piece of rattan, a reed that grows native to Southeast Asia.
